Junior promposals: prom in a pandemic
With prom just ending, students talk about how they proposed to their prom dates.
May 27, 2021
This year, prom season looked a little different. For RV’s junior prom, it was held outdoors where social distancing and to an extent, wearing a mask, took place. However, one thing stayed the same: promposing. This term is used when an individual is asked to prom with a proposal, and these proposals can range in creativity from small to over the top.
The Holly Spirit interviewed five couples to see what their own promposal experience was like, and if the pandemic changed anything.
Holly Spirit: describe your promposal.
- Owen Southwick and Ella Ruminski:
- Ruminski: “I got lollipops and a poster that said ‘prom would suck without you.’”
- Andre Faigal and Abby Cifaldi:
- Faigal: “I asked Abby to get a bunch of dogs together with my friends and we surprised her by bringing the dogs to her door. I wanted to do a dog meetup, and four of the dogs had the word “PROM” spelled out on a shirt that they wore. I also wrote a sign and had flowers.”
- Nolen Warwick and Lexie Corn:
- Corn: “Nolen came to my house, and held up a poster that had to do with ice cream because that’s my favorite food and he gave me a poster that went with a big ice cream cake.”
- Craig Flynn and Kerry Jamison:
- Flynn: “My promposal was a poster with ducks on it that said ‘I would be a lucky duck to go to prom with you.’”
- Aidan Towhey and Emma Traver:
- Towhey: “I made a poster and brought flowers.”
HS: Why did you choose to propose in that way?
- Owen Southwick and Ella Ruminski:
- Ruminski: “I like lollipops! It was very nice.”
- Andre Faigal and Abby Cifaldi
- Faigal: “Abby loves dogs and I thought, ‘Why not?’”
- Nolen Warwick and Lexie Corn:
- Corn: “I have expressed my whole life that I like ice cream, so he knows that and that was a good way of doing it.”
- Craig Flynn and Kerry Jamison:
- Flynn: “Kerry’s favorite animal is a duck.”
HS: What was your/their reaction?
- Owen Southwick and Ella Ruminski:
- Ruminski: “I said yes, it was very cute.”
- Andre Faigal and Abby Cifaldi
- Faigal: “[Abby] was surprised.”
- Cifaldi: “I was like, ‘Nice.’”
- Nolen Warwick and Lexie Corn:
- Corn: “I was surprised because I thought he was going to do something with soccer, but I was happy with ice cream. I kinda knew it was coming soon.”
- Craig Flynn and Kerry Jamison:
- Flynn: “She was very happy.”
- Aidan Towhey and Emma Traver:
- Towhey: “She said yes.”
This prom season was surely different than those in the past, however, this also meant new experiences and ideas. Furthermore, junior prom 2021 was without a doubt one for the books, and so were the promposals.
