No more “slipping through the cracks”: Leila Hewitt, Arts & Culture writer

I’ve always been good at slipping through the cracks – going quietly unnoticed as I pursue my interests and struggle to find a place in the future. Since freshman year I’ve grown more expressive, my passions more deeply rooted and explored, and even more unapologetically awkward. Communicating with other people without stumbling never got easier during high school, but the Holly Spirit gave me the opportunity to speak my mind and share my interests at my own pace.

Before I get into my experience in the newspaper, I’d like to appreciate the people who supported me throughout my time at RV. It was pretty rough for more than half the time, and I’m not sure where I’d be without their support. I’d like to thank the librarians, Mrs. Venuto and Mrs. Wells, for providing me with a safe and comfortable space to work on my art and have a quiet moment in what were (often) otherwise chaotic days. I’d also like to thank my art teachers, Mr. Furno and Ms. Pulla. I literally don’t think I’d still be pursuing art without Furno constantly supporting me and inspiring me. That’s pretty awesome. I’d also like to thank Mr. Burns for not just publishing my artwork in the Litmag, but going to my art show in person to support me.

Being a part of the newspaper was sort of an unexpected decision. I officially joined in my junior year, looking for an outlet to write. Sharing my special interests is deeply important to me, so writing about books, art and the like has given me confidence and a general feeling of accomplishment. I also never thought I’d get Best of SNO, so uh, wow. Thank you Sherm for everything you’ve contributed to the paper and for all of your insight and hard work. You’re a fantastic teacher and you’ve truly started a legacy at RV with the Holly Spirit.

Like I said before, I’m not very vocal in person; my clothes and artwork tend to say more about me than I do. Regardless of the impact I’ve made on others, I’m leaving RV on the path to the successful art career I’ve always dreamed of. I wish the best for all of my classmates. Goodbye class of 2023!
