The RV World Languages Department has just finished its annual Italian Heritage month celebration. The celebration took place over the month of October with many events being hosted by both the Italian club and Italian classes.
With events like Italian trivia during I/E, coffee and cannoli for staff and a field trip to different Italian establishments in Philadelphia, and teaching the students in FLIP program some Italian words and culture. This year’s celebration of Italian American Heritage month celebration was not only for those who take Italian classes or are a part of Italian Club, but for everyone at RV.
“We have a big population of students whose background is Italian. They come from Italian families and some of them are exposed to the Italian language and culture at home, others are not,’’ said Italian teacher Annalisa Riccio. “So there is a desire… to learn more so it is important to celebrate our ancestors and to know where we come from.’’
One of the ways students have been learning more about Italian culture is through the many different events that were held throughout the the month, like the cooking demonstration of an Italian dish after school.
“My favorite event was definitely cooking with the students. I was able to cook an Italian dish that I love to eat and share the history with [the students]’’ Riccio said. Sharing this moment was a bonding moment with the students being new to RV, I was able to share my experience and that piece of culture with the.’’
Some members of Italian club not only gained more knowledge about Italian and Italian American culture, but they also had a lot of fun while doing it.
“I went to the cooking demonstration and the [helped with] FLIP program’’ said senior Alisa Fritter. “ [ I enjoyed] eating cannoli and hanging out with everybody in Italian club.”
The Italian American heritage month celebration is not only one of the most anticipated events of the year by the Italian department, but is also anticipated and appreciated by all of the students and staff at RV. If you have any questions email Signora Riccio or Signora Nale or stop by C225.
