“Dune” hit the movie theaters on October 22 with almost three hours of action, mystery and excitement. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, author Frank Herbert’s elaborate science fiction world comes to life with lucid animation, riveting music and an unforgettable cast of characters. With Timothée Chalamet starring as Paul Atreides and Zendaya portraying Chani of Arrakis, “Dune” is bound to intrigue viewers by its cast alone.

The movie centers around young protagonist Paul Atreides, a boy fated for a mysterious and enormous destiny, who travels with his family to a dangerous desert planet in an attempt to cultivate a spice. The spice is the most valued resource in the universe and is desired for its unique psychedelic properties that give the user heightened sensory perceptions and even an extended lifespan. However, the indigenous people of Arrakis, known as Fremen, despise off-worlders who mine the spice selfishly; they employ various guerrilla tactics to hinder their operations. As imperial forces from all over the universe clash to control the mining of spice, Paul does everything in his power for him and his family to survive the conflict.

The movie makes for a fantastic entrance into the “Dune” universe with its array of stunning visuals and depictions of characters and fantasy creatures. The books are often referred to as confusing because Herbert leaves a lot to his readers’ imaginations. “Dune” eases the experience of reading the books by supplying its audience with simple explanations of technology and graphic scenery.

If you decide to watch “Dune” in theaters, prepare for a long and exciting ride. Blankets, snacks and drinks are all great things to bring with you in preparation for your three-hour immersion into the “Dune” cinematic universe – and that’s only part one! Villeneuve intends on making three “Dune” movies, with the potential for a spin-off prequel series called “Dune: The Sisterhood.”

Whether or not you’ve read the books or seen the original, “Dune”  is a compelling and action-packed film that’s worth a watch for new and old fans alike.
