It’s Valentine’s Day season, which means it is the time of the year to indulge in chocolate and watch the best rom coms with your significant other…or by yourself. Nevertheless, here are the top five most entertaining yet underrated rom coms to watch.
1. “Drive Me Crazy” (1999)
“Drive Me Crazy” is a humorous love story following the “fake dating” and “boy next door” tropes. This movie stars two teenage neighbors, Chase and Nicole, who are worlds apart despite living next door to each other. When both of their love lives are in ruins, they plot a scheme to fake a date in order to make their significant others jealous. During their fake relationship, Chase and Nicole realize they might just have more in common than they think. “Drive Me Crazy is a heartfelt 90’s rom com, and definitely a comfort movie.
“The characters were portrayed so perfectly and fit the whole story line”, said Jordyn Heyward, a freshman.
2. “Plus One” (2019)
“Plus one” is a realistic and wholesome representation of friends to lovers. This story is shown through good friends, Ben and Alice. Both of them have been invited to a series of weddings throughout the summer. Seeing as both of them are single, none of them are excited to attend these weddings but must go; that is until they agree to be each other’s plus one’s at every single wedding. Through the series of weddings, Ben and Alicie grow even closer facing the hardships of love and commitment.
3. “Two Weeks Notice” (2002)
Starring Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant, this movie will surely keep you entertained. Lucy Kelson, played by Sandra Bullock, is a devoted and ambitious environmental lawyer. Lucy is determined to perceive a community shelter that is scheduled to be removed , when she lands a job at billionaire George Wade’s company. Her life flips for the better…or worse. George may be a billionaire, but he happens to be very indecisive. Over time, George begins to grow dependent on Lucy and her opinions, even about the littlest of things. Annoyed, Lucy gives her two weeks notice in quitting her job and even finding George a new assistant, to replace her. In her two weeks, tension grows between Lucy and George, and even makes Lucy jealous of George and his new assistant.
4. Leap Year (2010)
Valentine’s Day is around the corner, but this year also happens to be leap year. Which makes it the perfect time to watch the hilarious and sweet film, “Leap Year.” Successful real estate agent Anna Brady is frustrated when her longtime boyfriend Jermey still won’t propose after four years together. Watching all her friends get engaged, Anna decided to take matters into her own hands by following a Celtic tradition which allows women to propose on leap year. Unsure but optimistic, Anna decided to surprise Jeremy on a work trip in Dublin, to propose. That was the plan until a storm winded her up on the other side of Emerald Isle, unable to make her way to Dublin on her own, she seeks help from a carefree, witty, Irishman, Declan. Though they quarrel a lot, the journey to Dublin brings two strangers closer together and takes them down a road of true love.
5. Fools Rush In (1997)
New York City real estate developer, Alex Whitman and a young woman named Isabel Fuentes have a one night stand in Las Vegas. Though the pair do not plan to see one another again, the universe brings them together 3 months later when Isabel learns she is pregnant with Alex’s child. Though they do not know much about one another, they are drawn to each other and decide to marry. The pair is pressured by one another’s family, with Isabel’s disapproving father and Alex’s parents who don’t know much about Isabel. Despite all that, the couple thrive, well that is until Alex receives a promotion in New York. Isabel loves Las Vegas and holds a special bond there, which leaves Alex torn between New York and Las Vegas and their marriage in shambles.
