Social media is an outlet that people can turn to for an escape from society. Platforms such as Instagram, X (Twitter) and TikTok are some of the most popular social media platforms used today, especially by children and teenagers.
Social media provides opportunities to communicate and discover people with similar interests. Influencers use social media platforms to express themselves and hopefully inspire others. Even though many use social media to benefit people, not surprisingly, others also use the platforms maliciously with the intent to discriminate and hate different groups of people.
Sexism portrayed in social media
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the definition of sexism is, “prejudice or discrimination based on sex.” The usage of social media makes viewers highly susceptible to harmful ideologies promoted by influencers.
In a recent controversy, a streamer named Sneako promoted sexist ideas on his social media platform. His fans then replicated his sexist comments which surprised Sneako. In the video clip viewed on TikTok, he seems to understand his influence on young teens, asking the camera, “What have I done?” However, later on, he tweeted, “Boys will be boys.” Obviously, denying the responsibility he has in the situation and in doing so, encourages sexist behaviors.
“He doesn’t know how to take responsibility and accountability for his actions,” said sophomore Gianna Miller. “If he isn’t going to make friendly content for all, he shouldn’t be creating anything.”
One of the most popular, hate-spreading influencers Andrew Tate inspires similar ideologies. His misogynistic views have had a bigger influence on teens and even young adults throughout these past years. Andrew Tate’s popularity helped the spread of sexism, and in my life, I could see how the sexism I was experiencing became more prominent as Andrew Tate became more popular. He really made a dangerous impact on people, especially men; he made men think they were superior and feel comfortable being sexist. An investigation conducted by Observer showed how the TikTok algorithm actually boosted misogynistic videos but claimed to discourage them. It is evident that almost nothing is being done to combat the systemic issue which is sexism.
Social media’s role in promoting sexism
Of course, sexism was an important issue prior to social media, but these platforms contribute a substantial amount of influence on supporting, spreading and popularizing hateful ideologies in society. Getting rid of social media won’t make sexism disappear, so when faced with sexism on social media and in real life, it is important to stand up for the people affected as well as say something to raise awareness of how sexism is dehumanizing.
Judging someone based solely on their gender is unacceptable. Society must not downplay sexism but should call out those discriminating against others. Your opinion has an influence, so advocate against encouraging discrimination and remember to be yourself and not let anyone change that.
