Former One Direction superstar, Zayn performed and announced his “Stairway to the Sky” tour, a highly anticipated event for his fans worldwide. The former “One Direction” superstar is scheduled to perform 21 times in multiple venues across various countries. Anxiously anticipating a tour following the release of Malik’s fourth studio album Room Under the Stairs, fans indicated their appreciation and support, selling out tickets almost instantly for his first tour in nearly a decade.
In early fall, Malik announced his solo tour Stairway to the Sky, initially expected to kick off on October 23, 2024, in San Francisco, California. Zayn had not gone on tour since he was a member of One Direction, and fans were thrilled to have the opportunity to see him in person. Thousands of people waited in the queue on Ticketmaster to purchase highly-demanded tickets. Within a week of release, tickets were sold out, a major accomplishment for any artist.
Unfortunately, after his close friend and former One Direction member Liam Payne passed away, Zayn had to postpone the United States leg of the tour. He rescheduled the performances originally set for October 2024, moving them to January 2025. Worried fans displayed their understanding by sending Zayn well-wishes during the “unforeseen circumstances” that he mentioned on his Instagram story.
Zayn’s world tour began in Leeds, England, and is expected to conclude in Mexico City, Mexico. Visiting the United States, England, Scotland, and Mexico, Zayn hopes to appeal to a diverse audience.
Canceling a show on December 3, 2024, in Newcastle, England, fans were disappointed due to the short and unexpected notice. Zayn was not certain about his voice and did not want to deliver anything less than a full experience for his fans, therefore, he canceled his concert: “I’m so sorry to do this but my voice just isn’t there at all tonight and without it, there’s no show.”
Incorporating a cover of Paolo Nutini’s song “Last Request,” Zayn’s setlist is typically composed of 17 songs, featuring fan favorites including “Sweat,” “BoRdErZ,” “iT’s You,” “Pillowtalk,” and “What I Am.” His breathtaking live performances have left fans shocked, creating a unique experience for the audience.
When asked about her favorite songs from the tour’s setlist, junior Gianna Miller, a fan of Zayn, spoke about two songs in particular, citing the atmosphere and vocals as reasons they are her personal favorites.
“‘Lied To’ because I love it when everyone, including Zayn, waves their hands back and forth during the slower songs, and ‘Pillowtalk’ too because it sounds so amazing live in its acoustic version, and blends with the background singer’s vocals so beautifully,” Miller said.
Zayn’s fashion choices for his shows have highlighted his personality and individuality, showing confidence in his style by wearing a diverse selection of simple, sleek, and casual pieces. Zayn’s distinctive style is reflected in the tour’s merchandise. The “Stairway to the Sky” merchandise contains various items including tote bags, hats, short-sleeve shirts, long-sleeve shirts, and sweatshirts.
Miller also talked about her opinions on Zayn’s fashion choices, discussing how thoughtful the pieces were. “All of his outfits are casual but well-coordinated too. My favorite would have to be his all-black outfit from his January 25th New York Night 2 Show, or his LA Night 1 Show on the 28th,” Miller said.
At the end of his shows, Zayn projects a message honoring Liam Payne’s life. Throughout his concerts, Zayn also wears a piece of Liam Payne’s necklace, showing his respect for his close friend.
Miller, like many of Zayn and One Direction fans in general, believes that the death of Liam Payne was a true tragedy and hopes the best for their well-being during this trying time.
“It was very sudden and devastating, and I think all the boys [from One Direction], especially Zayn, deserved time away from their jobs and the media to process everything and slowly find their way back to a good place with their mental health and each other during such a difficult time,” Miller said.
Displaying appreciation for his fans and their dedication to his work, Zayn’s world tour titled “Stairway to the Sky” explores numerous countries, as he will perform 21 times for committed fans all over America, Mexico, Scotland, and the UK. Fans convey their understanding of Zayn’s circumstances as he alters show dates, being considerate of unexpected events in his life. His individuality is exhibited through his fashion and musical choices, attracting new and long-time fans. As Zayn tours for the first time as a solo artist, he can experiment and grow as an artist.
