Prom is viewed as the highlight of the school year, the event that teens, parents, and teachers anticipate and prepare for weeks. All effort poured into planning this lively occasion can either make or break the night, making it considered one of the most stressful gatherings of the year.
Surprisingly, transportation tends to create more tension than expected. Whether arriving by a limo, party bus, or driven by a parent, figuring out how to travel to and from prom starts to become a challenging issue. These decisions often come from personal preferences; some students may prefer a rented limo or a party bus to celebrate with friends, while others would rather travel with a parent for affordability and supervision.
The average cost to rent a limo or party bus in New Jersey ranges from $135 to $350 per hour. A limo holding only 6 passengers can start around $135 to $145 per hour, while a party bus holding 18 to 30 people can range from $235 to $300 per hour.
During the prom season, limousine hourly rates range from $75 to $200, while $150 to $400 for buses, which would lead to an individual paying around $50 and higher just for themselves. Add that to the money already spent on attire, hair, nails, makeup, and shoes, and the total cost quickly reaches close to a thousand for most individuals.
With already so much money on the line, students at RV have strong opinions about the best way to arrive. Some say the expense is worth it for the experience and the photos that come with it, such as Junior Saniya Ganney comments here, “ A limo may be expensive but it makes a statement. Prom is supposed to be a memorable event.”
While others agree with Saniya’s comment on making a statement, others make their transportation choices based on their personal feelings. Many believe the most important part of prom night is enjoying time with friends rather than themselves, like Junior Olivia Clark, who states, “Parents are boring. I want to spend my night with my friends, and renting a bus gives me the perfect opportunity for that.”
While students view transportation as a way to extend the fun, adults of the RV community tend to focus on the safety aspect. For the adults, comfort and cost play only a small role; the real concern is responsibility. With most upperclassmen between the ages of 16 to 18, parents expect their kids to be on their best behavior and make smart decisions.
Some adults believe hiring a professional driver is the perfect way to guarantee everyone’s safety and keep structure, ensuring the night is exciting but controlled, like Mrs.Trump, a RV staff member, who says, “Honestly, something like a limo or party bus usually hits that sweet spot. You’ve got a professional driver, everyone’s together, and there’s a bit more structure than kids splitting up into different cars. It just feels a little more controlled without killing the fun.”
Another staff member, Mrs.Gray, brings a different perspective on the issue, stating, “Part of me believes that driving to Junior Prom should be the norm to make Senior Prom a little more special with a limo bus.”
Ultimately, there is no right way to travel to prom. Whether by limo, party bus, or parents’ car, what matters most is creating a memorable and safe prom night.
