Since the pandemic, many school districts across the country have shortened their school week to four days instead of the traditional five day school week.
According to CBS News, almost 900 school districts in the United States currently use a four-day weekly academic schedule. This number has increased from just 650 districts in 2020.
Most of the school districts implementing this change are smaller and in rural areas. Many of these schools have been struggling because of the nationwide teacher shortage that has been ongoing for the past few years.
Paul Thompson, a professor from Oregon State University, who has been studying the impact this change, notes the decisions many districts are forced to make in the wake of the pandemic and changing financial needs.
“It’s harder for them to raise funds to pay teachers better, and so these nonmonetary benefits can be seen as a way to quickly try and attract teachers, instead of trying to go to taxpayers within these very small confines that they have,’’ he said.
Research about the four day school week has been inconclusive on whether it is beneficial or not.
A report by the National Conference of State Legislatures states that “… a four-day school week can help to boost teacher morale. With an extra day to plan lessons, grade assignments and attend professional development opportunities, teachers can feel more prepared and engaged in their work. This can lead to better job satisfaction, which can translate into better classroom performance.
However, opponents argue that longer school days can be difficult for students, especially those in elementary grades. Four-day school weeks can also pose a challenge to families who are unable to find affordable, enriching care arrangements on the fifth weekday. Further, students who are food insecure may not have access to sufficient meals during the off day.’’
Students at RV also see the benefits of a four day school week.
“They sound cool. They sound like they would be a good idea,” said senior Max Balsamo. “Everybody by Friday is already tuned out. [ If RV had a 4 day school week] people would be more efficient on the days that they’re here because they are resting for enough time.”
Although the exact effects a four day school week has on students and teachers is still unknown, many school districts in the U.S. continue to make the switch in hopes that it can help alleviate some of the issues facing many schools today.
