For many RV juniors and seniors, the Prom is the biggest event of the year. Students get dressed up in their best attire, and feel like royalty for the night. It truly is an amazing night for the students, filled with food, dancing, photos and laughter.
While prom can be a highlight, for some it can also be a burden. According to Money.com, the average female spends upwards of $900 on her dress, shoes, hair, makeup, transportation, and ticket. As someone who did attend prom last year, I can attest to that; it is an incredibly expensive endeavor (well worth it, but nonetheless expensive). For what is supposed to be one of the best nights of a young adult’s life, there seems to be a pretty hefty cost that limits a lot of families in the community. The “Say Yes to the Prom Dress” program aims to give students the opportunity to go to prom in style without the extra extravagant costs.
Community members were welcome to donate new or gently used prom dresses and prom attire that were later given away to students who needed them and wanted to go to prom. Academic organizations such as the National Honors Society advertised the opportunity to all of their members in hopes to get the word out.
Senior and NHS Community Service Chair Ava Paolone felt especially passionate about the program, doing her part to get as many donations possible.
“Say Yes to the Prom Dress is an amazing way for us all to give back to the community so everyone is able to experience the joys of prom, no matter the price,” she said. She reported that they were successful in getting donations from club members for the program.
Donations for Say Yes to the Prom Dress do not have to be limited to just dresses; people were able to donate shoes, tuxedos, ties, belts, and anything other prom garment that was either new or gently used and able to wear. Dresses were, however, the star of the show. Donations could have been dropped off at the Main Office, the Guidance Office, or the Student Activities Office.
Overall, the Say Yes to the Prom Dress Initiative proved to be very successful. RV wants to thank everyone who donated, as you were an integral part in making a student’s prom a night to remember.
Junior Prom Tickets were sold in Student Activities Office for $70.00 towards the end of February, and Senior Prom tickets will be sold in March for around $100.00. Be sure to get yours, as tickets are limited. Happy Prom Season!
