The Super Bowl, one day of the year where many people in America and around the world gather around a screen to watch the big game. This year, the Super Bowl had 123 million viewers, making it the most watched Super Bowl in history. The Super Bowl brings in millions of viewers, giving commercials the opportunity for large amounts of publicity. So every year, many companies attempt to rise to the challenge, catering to their audience, spending millions of dollars attempting to create the best commercial.
Overall, the commercials this year weren’t bad in quality, but they weren’t great either. There was thought put into some of them, but in others you could see that they threw every celebrity they could onto the commercial just to make it seem better not putting actual thought into the promo. “They weren’t as enjoyable as they were in previous years,” Sophomore student Finn Schadt says when asked about the commercials, “I was a little disappointed.” Here are some of the most memorable commercials throughout the game.
The Dunkin’ Donuts commercial: “The DunKings”
This years Dunkin’ Donuts commercial features celebrities such as Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez, Matt Damon, and Tom Brady. Affleck surprises Lopez at her place of work, playing a song for her in the studio with his “boy band” featuring Damon and Brady called the “DunKings”. While Dunkin’ did put a lot of celebrities into the commercial to make it stick, the quality of the commercial was also pretty good. The overall premise of the commercial was pretty interesting as it was a continuation of last year’s commercial.
NFL: “Born to Play”
The commercial takes us to Accra,Ghana and shows us the story of a boy named Kwesi from Ghana who enjoys playing football. It’s a very interesting and fun commercial and features actual players such as Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson and Giants running back Saquon Barkley. Kwesi eventually makes it to a football field, where he has a conversation with one of the football players. The player says that it doesn’t matter where you are born, as long as you’re “born to play”. The NFL then ends with shining a light on their international player pathway.
Verizon: Beyonce’s Album announcement
Verizons collaborated with Beyonce for this commercial titled “Can’t B Broken”. This commercial featured Beyonce doing a number of stunts to “break Verizon’s network”, one even involved introducing an A.I of herself. The commercial emphasizes Verizon’s strength as a 5G network and does a good job at incorporating their message into the commercial. Glamorous and extravagant, the commercial ended with Beyonce announcing her new album.
Kia: Kia’s EV9
“Perfect 10”, the heartwarming commercial by Kia starts with showing a girl who is performing a ice skating routine. After the routine is finished, her father claps and looks down at the empty seat next to him. They then get into the Kia EV9 and drive to see her grandfather. She then performs the routine for her wheelchair-ridden grandfather, who gives the routine a 10 on the condensation from the window. The commercial is very emotional and has a good balance of showing the Kia EV9 while also keeping the emotion in the commercial.
Uber Eats: A commercial featuring former Friends stars
“Worth Remembering” by Uber Eats featured Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Usher, Jelly Roll, along with Victoria and David Beckham. It’s playing on forgetting something and in each frame, each of the stars forgets something important. Jennifer Aniston forgets that she was co-stars with David Schwimmer and at the end Usher forgets that he was in the halftime show. The whole premise was showing how UberEats can cover when people forget something, and overall was a decent commercial.
Still memorable commercials just a month later, these top 5 have continued to grace TV screens and social media platforms across the country, pushing their products and representing the top of the annual race for best Super Bowl commercial.
