It’s a new year here at RV, and the class of 2028 has entered the building! Along with them is a buzz of excitement, nerves, and a sense of fresh beginnings. For the freshmen, it’s a time to explore, make new friends, meet new teachers, and adapt to a new era in their lives. But beneath it all is a question that always lingers: What’s Next? With four years ahead to uncover interests, passions, and hidden talents, I spoke to a few freshmen to see if they had an idea of what is next for them.
“I want to be a body-builder” my good friend, August Smith, shared. With RV’s range of choices in the body-building profession–such as the wrestling club, an after-school gym, and strength and conditioning–he’s already on the right track to building a solid foundation for his future goals.
Katie Douglas shared, “I want to publish books and become a graphic designer.”
Luckily for Katie, RV has enough options for her to thrive in that field. She has taken the privilege of joining the school’s newspaper, as well as literary magazine, and has chosen electives that align with both writing and design. With that kind of dedication, she’s well on her way to achieving their aspirations.
Sophia Phillip expressed an interest in forensic law or forensic psychology. They’re part of the St. Vincent De Paul volunteer group, where they study human behavior and are already delving into topics that could shape their career path.
“I see myself playing softball in the future,” Widelys said. They’re hoping to join RV’s softball team very soon.
Taj, a student here at RV, wasn’t entirely sure on what career he’ll pursue, but mentioned he’s good at building things. Since RV has a woodworking and metal class–or so I’ve heard, he might discover himself developing a skill that could lead to a career in construction or engineering.
And lastly, a student who wishes to be anonymous expressed an interest in the medical field. The student is already involved in the Future Medical Professionals club. With so many possibilities to explore science and health in high school, they’re setting themselves up for success in a wide range of healthcare careers.
From bodybuilding to softball, the medical field to publishing books, it’s clear that our freshmen have diverse interests and big dreams. While some have a clear vision of their future, others are still exploring. And it’s no pressure; no one’s expecting you to figure it all out in one year. That’s what the other three years are for discovering new things, learning new skills, and finally figuring out what’s next.
